It could be either a small, low-power telescope, or increasingly these days because they are cheaper, a red-dot finder. The next favourite mistake is not knowing how to align the finder telescope, the small device on the side that is there to help you find objects. So the crucial thing when trying to find any object, is to start by using a low magnification, which means using the eyepiece with the largest number on it, generally 20 or 25 mm. Even finding a big object like the Moon can be tricky using a high magnification. And even worse, you see less of the sky, just like using the zoom when taking a photo. Obviously, things look bigger, but this means that the amount of light in the object is spread over a bigger area, so things actually look dimmer. Three things happen when you increase the magnification. Low magnifications are as useful when looking through a telescope as high ones, both for beginners and advanced observers. A 10 mm eyepiece gives a higher magnification than a 25 mm eyepiece, even though it has a smaller number and usually is smaller as well. Two is a bigger number than one, right? So how come a second magnitude star is fainter than a first magnitude star? That’s another story, but it’s true of eyepieces as well. Astronomy is full of numbers, and some of them seem to go the wrong way. Perhaps I should stop right now and let someone else take over, but there’s no-one else around so you’re stuck with me.įirst up, and favourite mistake by a long way, is starting with too high a magnification, which comes down to not knowing your eyepieces. So obviously my powers of explanation aren’t very good. And every time, wouldn’t you know it, people call me over to help them because they can’t see anything through their telescope, and always it’s something simple. Then, weather permitting, we go out and start observing. Today’s sponsor: This episode of “365 Days of Astronomy” is sponsored by the Salt Lake Astronomical Society.Ī couple of times each year I take part in weekend courses for beginners in astronomy, and every time we go through the basics of setting of a telescope and starting to observe. These reptiles cannot outrun a prairie fire. However, if prescribed burning is scheduled during the active season of ornate box turtles, the turtles are sure to be killed. The periodic burning of native tallgrass prairies and savannas has become a normal management practice. This species is closely connected to native grassland habitats, so people must continue our efforts to protect and increase the availability of native tallgrass prairie in Missouri. Prairie conservation is vital for this turtle's survival. Of all the reptiles, turtles are the most admired by humans for their symbolic characteristics of slow, steady progress, longevity, and resilience as well as for their unique body form. Ornate box turtles that overwinter in open grasslands have been known to congregate in brushy areas, such as under blackberry bushes. In open native prairie, the overwintering burrows may be nearly 30 inches deep. In winter, this species escapes the cold by burrowing down below the frost line, which may be 18 inches or more those that take shelter in wooded areas may not burrow as deeply. They may use the shallow water and mud of prairie wetlands during the hottest part of the summer. When inactive, ornate box turtles will shelter in clumps of grass, bury themselves in loose soil or sand, or enter burrows made by other animals.ĭuring the hot, dry days of mid-to-late summer, these turtles are generally inactive but will appear in numbers after a heavy rain. One study showed that they are active 20 percent of the day and inactive 80 percent. The typical daily routine for an ornate box turtle usually begins with a short period of basking soon after sunrise, followed by a period of foraging for food, a rest period during the heat of the day, and a short feeding session before resting at night. They will also live in open woodlands, rocky glades, and farm fields in former native prairie regions. In Missouri, ornate box turtles are active between late March and mid-October. Ornate box turtles are considered a prairie species, living where there is a mixture of prairie grasses and forbs. If you're near the Mississippi River, the absence of the ridge on the top shell, and the bold light lines on the lower shell, may be the best way to recognize an ornate box turtle. However, they typically have a more ornate carapace, with radiating yellow or orange marks dark smudges on the plastron and usually 4 toes (sometimes 3) on the hind limbs. carolina). Like the three-toed subspecies, they have a ridge along the center of the top shell. In Missouri's easternmost counties, along the Mississippi River, a sister subspecies of the three-toed box turtle may occur this is the eastern box turtle ( T. It is more of a woodland species than the ornate box turtle and is found statewide except for extreme northern and northwestern counties. carolina triunguis) usually has 3 toes on each hind leg, has a ridge along the center of the top shell, and the top shell is usually olive or olive brown with faint yellow or orange lines radiating from the center of each plate. Similar species: The three-toed box turtle ( T. There are normally 4 toes on each hind limb.Īdult male ornate box turtles are slightly smaller than females and have a concave area in the center of their plastron, an enlarged and inward-facing first toe of the hind limbs, and red eyes. The exposed skin is grayish brown, with faint yellow or orange-yellow spots or blotches the chin and upper jaw are yellow or yellow green. Across the plastron, just above the center, is a flexible hinge that allows the front and rear of the lower shell to press up against the upper shell, enabling the head, tail, and all four limbs to be protected from harm. The plastron is dark brown with bold light lines. A yellow stripe running along the midline of the carapace is often present. The carapace is brown to nearly black with numerous yellow lines radiating from the center of each scute (shell scale). The carapace has a flattened appearance along the dorsal surface and normally has no ridge. The ornate box turtle is a small, land-dwelling turtle with a domed upper shell (carapace) and hinged lower shell (plastron) that allows it to close its lower shell. It is a Kubernetes control plane component that embeds cloud-specific control logic. Service Account & Token controllers: It creates default accounts and API access tokens for new namespaces.Endpoints controller: It saves the endpoints object which means it joins the services and pods.It then creates Pods for running those tasks to completion. Job controller: The task of this component is to watch for Job objects that represent one-off/independent tasks.Node controller: It is responsible for identifying and responding when nodes go down. Each controller takes care of running the Kubernetes cluster and the Kube-controller-manager consists of several controller functions like these. Within the Kubernetes architecture, Kube-controller-manager is the control plane component that runs controller processes. Accordingly, it schedules the pod to an appropriate compute node required by the pod depending upon certain factors including resource requirements, hardware/software/ restrictions, affinity and anti-affinity specifications, inter-workload interference, and much more. The Kubernetes scheduler looks after the resources that a pod needs, such as CPU or memory, along with the complete health of the K8s cluster. It identifies where new containers are to be added. Also, kube-scheduler ensures that the Kubernetes cluster is healthy. It selects a node for the pods to run on. It is a component of the control plane that looks for newly created Pods with no assigned node. It is etcd, where users can find complete in-depth information and the true state of the cluster. etcdĮtcd is the key-value store database that contains the configuration data and information about the state of the Kubernetes cluster. It is the API server that determines whether a request is valid and in case if it is, then it processes the request. The Kubernetes API server, which is the front end of the Kubernetes control plane, is responsible for managing internal and external requests. The API server is a crucial component of the Kubernetes control plane that exposes the Kubernetes API. With the help of these K8s components, the Control Plane controls and responds to cluster events and makes sure that the containers within the K8s cluster are running in sufficient numbers and with the necessary resources. Here, we’ll talk about the components of the control plane. The control plane contains the core Kubernetes components that are responsible for controlling the complete Kubernetes cluster along with data that specifies the cluster’s state and configuration. Let's talk about the most crucial part of the Kubernetes cluster: the control plane. Here's the Kubernetes architecture diagram with all the components tied together. The components of the control plane help in taking decisions about the cluster (like scheduling the pods), as well as identifying and responding to cluster events ( such as starting a new pod when the deployment’s replicas field is unsatisfied). It manages the worker nodes and the pods within the Kubernetes cluster. It exposes the API and interfaces for deploying and managing the complete lifecycle of containers. The control plane (master node), in the Kubernetes architecture, is an important part of the Kubernetes cluster. The Kubernetes control plane automatically controls and manages the scheduling of these pods across different nodes within the cluster keeping into account the available resources on each Node. The worker node(s) are generally responsible to host the Pods. It represents a set of running containers within the cluster.Įvery cluster has at least one worker node. Wondering what are pods in Kubernetes? A pod is the smallest and simplest unit in the Kubernetes architecture model. Each node within the cluster is managed by the control plane and contains the services necessary to run Pods, which are made up of containers. The Compute Machines or Nodes( Worker Nodes) The Compute Machines or Worker NodesĪ node, inside a Kubernetes cluster, is a worker machine that can either be a virtual or a physical machine depending on the cluster. Kubernetes, also known as K8s, is an open-source system for automating deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications.Ī Kubernetes cluster is a set of nodes that runs containerized applications and workloads. Both are reflected in the illustration on Cooper & Thief’s label.Īny plans for aging in other types of spirit barrels and if so which? The thief, a long-used tool of the trade, is used to steal tastes of the wine as it is aging. Synonymous with the meticulous and artful craft of barrel making, the creed of the cooper is reflected in the creativity of the wine’s style. The name Cooper & Thief stems from the influence of craftsmanship and the role of winemaking. How did the name Cooper & Thief come about? The vanilla and spice is the bourbon influence from the additional bourbon barrel aging.Įverything! From aging the wine in carefully selected spirits barrels that impart bold, rich flavors to the high ABV, to the spirits-inspired packaging that stands out against regular bottles, Cooper & Thief wines taste and look different than anything else out there. The combined result is a rich flavor with a long, lingering finish. Aging for three months in used bourbon barrels gives way to soft velvety tannins, with a subtle heat (higher ABV at 16%). It is a dark, jammy red blend loaded with bourbon-inspired flavors and aromas. How and why?Ĭooper & Thief is not your average wine. I detect vanilla and spice in Cooper & Thief Red Blend. Like a fine bourbon, Cooper & Thief Red Blend is smooth with fantastic balance, and has big bold aromas and flavors imparted by the barrel aging process with a long lingering finish. What are the challenges/considerations when making wine with this technique?Ī challenge that we face with spirits barrel aging is ensuring that the purity of fruit is maintained and that the tannins are well integrated. The barrels introduce aromas and flavor characteristics that you won’t find in other wines. Leamy: In addition to traditional barrel aging, we take a portion of the wine and age it for three months in used spirits barrels including bourbon barrels for our Red Blend, tequila barrels for our Sauvignon Blanc, and whiskey barrels for our Cabernet Sauvignon. What does Bourbon-barrel aged wine mean? How does this differ from normal wine aging? Here, he breaks down the bourbon barrel-aging concept, and explains what makes his brand unique.Ĭhris Leamy conducts a seminar on barrel aging. Leamy’s hope is that his Cooper & Thief wines get people talking, sharing and bonding. He enjoys all aspects of the winemaking process, especially its ability to bring people together. From there he transitioned to winemaking. Following a foray into beer brewing, he turned his attention to the wine world as a lab tech in Lodi, California where he found his true passion. He first worked as a microbiologist, developing a keen understanding of the technical side of the food & beverage world. His California based Cooper & Thief Cellarmasters celebrates doing things a bit differently, such as aging its full portfolio of luxury wines in not only bourbon barrels, but also in carefully selected spirits barrels, achieving bolder flavors not typically found in regular wines.Ī California native with more than 20 years of award-winning winemaking experience, Leamy graduated from the University of California, Davis with a degree in Biological Sciences. Serving as ‘cellarmaster’ at one such wine brand is Chris Leamy. Typically featuring higher alcohol percentages than classic wines, bourbon barrel-aged wines are targeted to adventurous imbibers, those who enjoy experimentation and aren’t afraid to break with tradition. Bold and rich, bourbon barrel-aged wines seem to have found a permanent niche within the wine and spirits world. And we can’t do that if we have a paywall.
